Seeking recommendations for small, high-efficiency bookshelf speaker plans or kits.

I'm putting together a bedroom system. I've got an amp I'd like to use, but it's a very low power tube amp (about 2.5 watts). I need to build a pair of speakers that will function adequately with that little power. The catch is, they must also be quite small. No more than 10 inches tall, and no more than 7 inches deep. I realize that Hoffman's Iron Law dictates that these speakers will not have great bass response, but that's OK for this particular system.

This Kanspea speaker kit from Fostex is all I have found so far that might fit the bill. It is a complete kit including the cabinets. I have access to a woodshop, a laser cutter, and other tools, so if I had plans, I could make the cabinets myself.

Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks all.

Dear ChetJettison,

HB-05F, W.114*H.250*D.180(mm)

There is no data for HB-05F, but the performance is almost the same as HB-06F.
It will get the necessary and sufficient bass.
I think you can get enough volume with 2.5W.

Since you are willing to build cabinets, order a pair of Markaudio 5.3 drivers and build some uMar-Ken or uMar-KenPlus boxes. I believe the uMar-Ken plans are free but the slightly larger uMar-KenPlus plans require a fee. Both boxes are within your 10 x 7 limits. There is also a Bloodhound cabinet for the same driver which is a little too large at 11 x 7 3/4. The bloodhound plans are also free and will provide an easier build with more bass if you can live with the larger size.

Thanks for the replies everyone! So far I’m leaning towards the CHN40 or 50, as I can get a pair of those from Amazon.co.jp for only around $75, a bit cheaper than the A5.3. And the plans posted by nandappe for the HB-05F look easy enough to adapt for laser cutting.

Even the largest µMar-Ken for these is less than 10”.

The small one is freely available: https://frugal-phile.com/boxlib/P10free/uMK52-0v9-plan-220415.pdf

You will need to get the planset for the larger ones (or a custon variation).

Small ones in the front re the full-on trapezoidal µMar-Ken5T

Wow, those trapezoidal cabinets look absolutely terrific! But That might be a bit too challenging of a build for me. I think I'll try the smaller, free uMar-Kens to start with. Unless you think there'd be a substantial improvement with the uMar-KenPlus? Let me know if you think it'd be worth it.

Follow up question: I see that both the uMar-Ken and the uMar-Ken plus are designed for an Alpair 5.2 and use a brace piece behind the driver. Would the dimensions of the brace piece have to be changed in order to accommodate the CHN50? And lastly, is the brace piece glued to the back of the driver, or just pressed up against it? How necessary is the brace piece; can it be omitted?

Thanks Dave! You've really inspired me to move forward with this build.
