Just wondered. What is the background behind Skytronics speakers? They seem to be very well built for a very small amount of money. Are they badged drive units? How do they sell so cheaply with the sort of build/design quality?

Cant tell you why they are so cheap, but i can tell you that they are pretty good. Not high-end, but much better than other cheap speakers
Ah, now I see why they are so cheap. The manufactured tolerance isn’t that great. I bought a Kevlar coned unit and bought a second one separately and noticed a difference in the stiffness and dampening of the cones. The measurements were very much different between the 2 units.
It would seem that picking a batch of drive units and then match the units for the best pair match.

Pretty good idea. Please tell me how these kevlar cone speakers sound ( i have had only the ones with pp cones)

I have some of their woofers but have not finished building the speaker panels yet! I'd say that the value for money is great, but what you lose is quality. The front gaskets are slapped on willy nilly on the 12" woofers of theirs I have - I had to cut away a lot of glue to put bolts through the mounting holes.

Kevlar cones sound better than PP cones (Midrange), to my ears anyway. If you get a good sample the response curve is pretty smooth. However, I had one with a peaky rough curve above 1 kHz, didn't sound too good either.
If you use them primarily for low frequency audio, you can't really go wrong.

I bought 4 x 12" PP cheapies for LF duty on my new open baffle project. Variance here won't be an issue.
I played one of them just resting on the floor and distortion did set in quite early, but they seem good for £15 each!

Just been doing some more research on the skytronic 6inch Kevlar cones. I’ve been doing quite a bit of testing. The general response curve, in free space, is pretty smooth from around 70hz to 1khz. Above this frequency things aren’t too good. This driver would not make a good 2 way speaker system; it would need to be in a 3 way system. I managed to build a 2 way speaker with it and managed a fairly good frequency response, albeit with a 3-5db droop between 2 kHz to 3.5 kHz. This was achieved by excluding any xover filtering on the woofer and using only a 1st order on the tweeter. The sound quality not too bad, however the depression in frequency, noted above, gave a slightly forward lower midrange output. Pity, I was hoping for a good midband performance.
My next driver to test is the 5inch Kevlar unit. Already, this unit has a good response up to around 2 kHz, which isn’t too good for this size drive unit. However, it appears that skytronics may have designed the Kevlar rang to be used with a minimum order xover? I’ll see what the result is.
One question to the forum, does anyone know if the twin paper coned skytronic units have vented magnets?

Hi, where can i get some data sheet for Skytronic drivers? I would like to see how they works on different frequencies , its worth to buy or not.

I've just done a few tests on the 902.420 and found the Fs actually to be 45Hz. I wouldn't want to use it above 3Khz because there are some nasty peaks audible, especially at 3.7khz. After about 4.5khz it seems to settle down and up to10khz is measurable. My signal generator was giving some trouble but I hope to publish proper results soon.

Glad i found this thread. I'm making some speakers for a friend as a thank you. They're meant for his bar for general music. I found two of these 902.420's, and they look great! I bought them from a great place here in south Africa called pq sound. They published parameters, and the resulting box is perfect, so i got them. They weren't extremely cheap, but they look excellent, and I've given them a listen, and I'm really impressed! They are just not extremely efficient. I'm not going to measure them, but I will post my thoughts when I'm done.
Just as I thought everyone had forgotten these! They are remarkably inefficient and, having purchased 4 and put them in large cabinets, I don't know what to do with them now.
I finished construction of the first speaker. Other than being a little inefficient, I'm impressed! Really, I'm envious of my friend who will own these.
I need to balance the tweeters a little.
Box is 6.2 litres, with a total internal of about 5.4, once you add the port and speaker.
Port is 5cm x 33cm.
Bass is fantastic and overall quality is great.

I finished construction of the second speaker now. I have them set up and I'm powering them with a 50W amp to test. They're pretty remarkable! Excellent quality, possibly lacking slightly in the lower mid range, but now that I'm listening to different music, perhaps not. Still, the sound quality is really incredible! And they provide crushing bass! They easily reproduce what's required from Pendulum's Set Me on Fire, although you can hear the roll-off at the sub-bass spectrum is fairly steep. They're not going to provide the bass that physically moves the furniture, but they're not far off. They don't need a subwoofer - adding one is a nice-to-have, not a necessity. The tweeters are, admittedly, not the best out there, but they're not bad. They do provide the highs with clarity, but they seem to have a higher level of distortion than I had hoped, but not everywhere. With most music, you don't notice it at all. I'm currently listening to a YouTube mix: Best / ultimate deep bass chillstep mix [HD], and I'm thoroughly enjoying the speakers. I had to make sure my sub wasn't on!
Anyway, the point is that I'm saying these SkyTronic speakers are indeed good. They're not very expensive, and they're not extremely sensitive, but just power them with more power! These I'm testing go very loud! In a big room. I don't suspect it will be easy to find similar quality at this price in many parts of the world.
I'll look up my box dimensions and post some schematics. Anyone interested in hearing a recording?

Saved your pictures for posterity. Port is long, isn't it? Is that how it worked out? Usually they're about 120mm Long x 40-50mm Dia. It's not going to go very loud, is it? The S/S 15W can do 9mm Xmax, having long voicecoil.
Where exactly is the distortion? A bit more crossover work might help.

Hi. Thanks! The port worked out to 33cm for 53Hz, and is 50mm diameter. Quite long!
I'm not sure what the 85dB sensitivity quote is for, maybe at Fs? I just know the spec I got said that, and also 87dB nominal, which seems to be correct because i balanced the tweeter with a 10 ohm resistor, and it has a sensitivity of 90dB.
Either way, they do go loud. At least, loud enough. For very small speakers, I'd say they're average ito loudness.
