Anyone familiar with a good design for a 3 way center that isn't huge? I'm not looking for massive power just even sound at a wider angle.
I forgot he has centers. That one looks pretty good. I forgot to mention budget in my post and that one is on the high end of it but not terrible. The angled cuts would be a challenge without a table saw but a really nice design.
The Seas center prestige looks like it might be a really good option. The speaker is mounted high so I don't need to angle the front baffle and the price is reasonable. Any idea on how close to a wall it can be placed?
thanks!

Have you looked on craigslist or ebay at used center channel speaker prices, as they are scraping bottom?
Hello down there,
At $499.00 a pair shipped down under, I think it's still a " sound" investment, these beguile there size and sound like much more expensive speakers. I've been building speakers for going on 40 years and have to say, I'm impressed!

Granted, these include boxes that still require gluing and finishing if you want to use something other than the black wood-grain vinyl supplied. I recently built my grandson a pair and have to say, they really are quite nice. The original x-over is a little bright, but after doing a little research and modifying it using Option 4: The perfectionist option located here, very pleased.

Really is an all around quality sounding speaker. Great bass extension with a detailed, accurate mid section though a somewhat forward, bright high end (when using the stock x-over configuration). The x-over modification really flattens it out, to my liking. Adding a decent powered sub or two really compliments them well (assuming that you are running at least one, preferably two subs for your home theater).
I replaced the tweeter x-over caps with Dayton Audio PMPC-250V Precision Audio Metallized Polypropylene Capacitors. I used the Audyn Cap (red series) like these for the mid section of the x-over:

I ended up replacing all the mid crossover components with those but you could just replace the values needed to accommodate the new values indicated. The HiVi caps are decent enough though I would definitely upgrade to the Dayton 1% caps for the tweeters and you'll have to acquire a .5mH coil and I highly recommend replacing the iron ore 1.5mH as well with a 1.5mH 18guage Dayton air coil too.
Replaced resistors with these:
Dayton Audio DPR10-5.6 5.6 Ohm 10 Watt Precision 1% Audio Grade Resistor
You could source all the drivers but if I recall it was around the same as it was from Amazon when purchasing the kit. Making a custom box for center using two of the woofers, two mids and two of the tweeters side by side or stacked (tweeters only) in a W/M/T-T/M/W configuration would yield a pretty amazing center! I can provide you the box dimensions and the port values if needed.
I have Bass Box Pro and X-Over pro too. I would be happy to do a look/see with the existing drivers you have as well. Either way, good luck!

I'd rather build the speaker.
The swan speakers are 3-ways but not centers.
I've also looked at Paul Carmody's Swope center. Apparently the M6N and M5N can be used in it but those are on back order for at least a few months now. I'm currently using an MTM overnight sensation on its side but I'd really like to improve off axis performance with a good 3-way and I've got the itch to build.

I hadn't even thought of that, but it is the right layout. How close to the wall can the passive radiator be?
zaph's site claims the ZA5.3c covers 50 degrees reasonably well, that would be wide enough with a 2 way.
Seas Loki III looks promising as well on its side

Being there is a small dip between mid and woofer, it'll fill in closer to the wall. I would think a foot would be a good starting spot. Anywhere from 2' to 4' from walls sounds good.I hadn't even thought of that, but it is the right layout. How close to the wall can the passive radiator be?
