I don't know how they make those speakers - but they sound so much better than what they should according to components inside. I have built ProAc Clone hoping to upgrade from Studio 125, and it did not come even close. Studios kicked Clone's a** in every respect, and I had top notch components in Clones. This was just a beginning in series of DIY disappointments, which ended with Gainclone. I am now seriously thinking in buying Studio 140 without even auditioning them, if I could only get rid of Clones somehow, they are almost impossible to sell.
Its all about the crossover with ProAc, apparently anyway. I spoke to Stewart once and he told me he puts more into the crossover than any other component of the speaker. The drive units he uses are good but its the magic that goes into the crossover that makes ProAc so special. Wish I knew what they did, I'd make a few.
I have had a D15.... Don't like how the mid-treble area is sounding and while it's going low for a 2 ways I find it not very thight there and too thin in the mid-treble certainly due to a too straight spl curve. rhodium rod for the bind posts is an important part and onr can play a little there from bi wirering or wirering from the treble b-p or the bass unit ones !

To me they make great speakers, very natural sounding, lots of consistency throughout the range, they all sound very much alike. Its the tonal accuracy I've always liked and the timbre of instruments and vocals, very lifelike. I wish I knew how he does it. And most of all they are very enjoyable with music, trouble is they cost a fair bit as well for what is something which is maybe overpriced a bit.
I know what you mean about the 15Ds I had a set 1.5s which is basically the same. Can understand why you say what you do there. They always wanted to be driven I found as well and they'd come alive, they weren't so great at lower volumes, but still very good.
