Soundstream old school amplifiers

Soundstream Airbass

Perry, yeah the ref with the suffix 's' had a header and a switch on the pcb for an external wired volume control. The ones with 'sx' were set up to use the airbass.

I appreciate the offer. I don't need them but they are pretty rare and some of the other members may want to see what it looks like. If you're going to post more than a couple, it may be better to start a new thread.

wadest:
There doesn't seem to be any difference in the 'S' amps with the header and the 'SX' amps except that the SX had mounting bosses in the cover for the airbass module. Is that correct?

here's some pics of the airbass module with remote,
note- mine has a burnt smd component I think it's a resisitor

dear wadest,
are you able to give any insight into the reference class a Picasso? or why has this design has become so acclaimed and why old school collectors go to such lengths to find them. i'm installing one into my car this week after a couple of years searching (which resulted in myself acquiring 2, of which one was luckily repairable).
oh another question, I found somewhere here on another diyAudio forum somebody mentioning how to mod a reference 300 into a class a 3.0. is this a possibility?
many thanks to all here on this forum including Wade and Perry, i am in awe of your work and talent!
best regards paul

REFERENCE 700s

Perry, I don't remember if I sent you the 700s schematic or not. Here it is. the difference between the 700s and sx is the s has a connector and an in, out switch for a wired volume control and the sx has a connector and in, out switch for the Airbass.
Thanks, Wade

SOUNDSTREAM OLD SCHOOL AMPLIFIERS
Hello, my name is Wade Stewart. I am the engineer that designed and manufactured all of the Old School Soundstream amplifiers and crossovers from 1981 through 1998, all REFERENCE, CLASS A’S and old RUBICON amps. I am here for any discussions, questions or any other need you may have concerning old school Soundstream amps and crossovers. I also offer Schematics, Owners Manuals and Repair of any older Soundstream amps.

Just wanted to say after all these years, they are still the amps I love. From their awesome sound, to the clean aesthetics, it's pretty dang hard to improve on them. Glad to see you on here!

Hello Wadest, I have an old SS Reference 405 that blows both 30A fuses the second you turn it on. I received it this way. I have been through it many times with my bench top Fluke multimeter but have never isolated the faulty components. The D101 and D102 Were missing when I got the amp. I was wondering if you had the schematics for this amps and any insight on possible faults causing this. Of course anyone with the know how is more than welcome to chime in...please.

I love my older Soundstream amps, and don't know what I would do if they stopped working.
What ever happened over on that other forum where several people had sent equipment to be repaired and had to go to great lengths to get the amps back again, not repaired?
Not to be a party pooper or anything but...

I'm not sending it anywhere, just wondering what I'm missing.

I keep getting erroneous readings when checking the transistors and yeah I know the difference between NPN and PNP transistors. I can't scope anything without it up and running and know that the problem is most likely in the power supply.
D 102 was blown apart, same with D 101. D 102 is right at the input of the remote lead, D 101 is between the 12V rail and ground plane right after F 10. These have not blown again since i replaced them so whatever caused them to destruct must have been one hell of a short.

Again, any help is appreciated. 😎

Start a new thread if you're needing help with a repair. In this thread it will be useless (due to interwoven off-topic posts) to anyone who is looking for similar repair information in the future.

I thought that was the point of this thread per the first post from the OP:

That is exactly what I did. 😕 Where did I go wrong? 😕

The thread has become cluttered. If you start a new thread that's dedicated to a repair, it will not have other discussions intertwined with the repair questions and answers. This make it easier for all to follow and makes it more useful to others who may find the information useful in future searches. You can remain in this thread if you wish.

I mean no disrespect, and I believe that a great designer can be a tremendous resource on a forum such as this.
That said, please carry on with productive and interesting interaction, as I have nothing personal against anyone on this forum or any other. I do believe (thx for the link Perry)transparency should be there in any business dealings, keeps everyone happy and talking...
