Hi everyone,
I was wondering, what would make a decent quality subwoofer(s) partner for my Diatone DS-5000 4 way speakers?
More info on my speakers see this link
DIATONE DS-5000
My main use would be music, with occasional (1x week) movie night. So focus is more music.
My room will be 6 meters length 3 meters high and 3.9 meters wide.
The room is rectangular with 30mm gyprock, insulation in the walls & ceiling & roof. A sold door and sound reduction windows. The floor is concrete covered with 20mm plywood and wool carpet.
I plan to have a sofa and a desk behind the sofa opposite the speakers which are going to be on the long wall.
I’m thinking DIY subs as I know a good cabinet maker. However I’m unsure what might be suitable.
The rational is to have a quality sub that can reach say 15hz Max.
Not sure about a suitable crossover frequency either with these speakers and subwoofers.
Thank you all for any advice in advance and I hope everyone is staying safe in these trying times.
Warm greetings from Australia
Tim

Greets!
Some quick questions:
Desired XO point/slope? 80 Hz/4th order is most common for HT and considering the DS's 20 Hz rating, seems a good place, but some folks like higher at THX's 120 Hz small HT.
Any idea what the woofer's 20 Hz efficiency is? Seriously doubt it's this high unless it's a stereo rating. Otherwise, how efficient do you want the sub system as this high typically takes multiple drivers?
What driver brands are available since ideally need a prosound 'sub' driver to get the quality, but have to use multiples to tune them to 15 Hz?
Doing about as well as can be reasonably expected considering I'm 74 with a long history of sinus infections, but got 'cabin fever' something fierce.

Hi GM thank you for your reply. Some good questions too!
I thought the crossover in the 80-100 hz range too - however not 100% sure I guess any XO 100hz or below allows more flexibility with sub placement.
Not sure what the woofers 20hz efficiency is how would I measure that?
I was think 2 x subs probably 15-18 inches, with their own amplification not sure of brands, because outside of Diatone (I have their outstanding SW-G50 car sub) I’m not sure which prosounds subs are recommended. I can source various subs here in Australia via store or internet.
I have attached a couple of pictures of the sub and info as they are Japan only.

Any other recommendations would be welcome.

You're welcome!
80 Hz it is then. 😉
Well, what little info they give indicates it only is useful to 20 Hz and implies 90 dB/W, which normally is spec'd midband, but no T/S specs to figure ~the frequency where it is, but says the driver is suitable for free air apps, so probably will be at > 80 Hz.
Regardless, servo control subs are normally designed for a specific box and the 'free air' implies sealed and further indicates it only needs 10 L, so without any vehicle cabin gain, doesn't sound like it's of any use to you in the home. Bet it's quite a performer in car, which is.....?
Really need the T/S specs and any manufacturer's manual, etc., to know for sure.
Otherwise, there's so many good sub drivers available now due to prosound finally 'getting down' at cinemas, live events and HT that it mostly boils down to what's readily available locally and price, so for starters, you tell me your options/budget/how low for movies: based on this: The Ultimate List of BASS in Movies w/ Frequency Charts | AVS Forum

GM thank you for some more considerations - you’re quite right the vehicle gain for that sub is another consideration I didn’t think about.
For my hifi room 6M long x 3M high x 3.9M wide I’m thinking of adding one or two subs.
I’m not sure what driver size would be suitable for this size room I’m considering 2x10-12 inch or 15-18 inch drivers. I’m thinking of using a MiniDSP to crossover the sub(s) with my amp - Yamaha A-S3000 integrated fully balance.
I’ve looked at Genelec 7350 & 7360A SAM which are mainly used with accurate studio monitors.
Do you have any thoughts DM on driver size, number of subs for mainly hifi system and sub brands which are more musically oriented?
