Tannoy Mercury M2.5 speaker pair - Both woofers not working (but the tweeters are) - help?

Hi people, I have just pulled out a very old pair fo Tannoy Mercury m2.5 speakers.... both only have their tweeters working where i have pulled everything apart and the woofers are all connected fine... I assume this is a chip issue.... can you suggest how this can be fixed?

The first thing to do is to disconnect the woofers and measure their resistance using an ohmmeter. A reading of a few ohms would indicate that the woofers are probably undamaged.

If you don't have an ohmmeter, connect a 1.5V or 9V battery momentarily across the woofer terminals. If you hear a crackle and see cone movement then the woofers are probably undamaged.
Report back your findings.
Next we may have to look at the crossover board. If you could supply a clear photo showing the components on the board, that would be most helpful.

Hi Galu, thanks for your help... So I have completed the multimeter and battery tests and it seems that the woofers are dead as there is no crackle/movement with the battery and no readings with the multimeter. Is there a way to fix woofers?

Is there a way to fix woofers?

Either both voice coils have been burned out due to overloading or there is a break in the connections between the driver terminals and the voice coil.

To have the voice coils replaced would be uneconomical in terms of this level of speaker.

To check the connections, examine the flexible tinsel leads that carry the current into the voice coil from the woofer terminals. There could be a break at one or other end of a tinsel lead, which you may be able to resolder.

Thanks Galu, the woofers looks in good condition with all wires and connections looking like new. These speakers have been sitting in storage for around 10 years but were working before they were put there (I'm not sure there was any overloading). There has been large flucutations in heat and cold in the storage area. Anyway, I suppose they go to recycling now... thanks for your help

The fine voice coil wire can corrode and become open circuit as a consequence of bad storage.

The ported enclosure is tuned to the electrical/mechanical parameters of the woofer and, without knowing those parameters, it would be nigh impossible to source a suitable replacement.

Your best bet would be to look out for woofers coming up at online auction - if the price is right!
