Tannoy system 15 DMTII crossover

Hi everyone,

I got a question about the tannoy system 15 DMTII crossover.
IMG-20220604-WA0016.jpg

The resistors for setting the tweeter level.
If i would make my own crossover.. can i only use the 6,8 ohms for a "level" position.
Or is the 6.8 always parallel to the 4.7 making it a 2.8r?
And the bass inductor.. does anybody have info about the dcr?

Cheers

No, but you can safely assume it is between 0.5 and 1 ohm. Do not worry about the exact DCR value, just use 2mH air core inductor with really thick wire - 14 (or 15) gauge, as it seems to be used in the original inductor.

About the Difference between MK1 and MK2,
Is there a sonic improvement between them in the high section?

MK1 3,9uf before a resistor.
MK2 two parallel 1,3uf with a resistor in series. And than a 1,3uf parallel to that.

Hope i explain this right😂

Just thought I’d share since I have a pair of System 15 DMT II.

I haven’t made a move to change enclosures as of yet, but have done quite a bit of research on them and their 3833GG drivers.

I was interested in Nelson Pass’s use of Tannoy drivers in large inverted Jensen Imperials as a “tool”…as he says…for evaluation of amplifiers and other components in the signal chain…not necessarily just for their “musicality”.

In a sense, I wanted to see what the big deal was with Tannoys and see if I could have the same experience…to see if I could get more insight into what he and others like him were hearing.

After searching and reading a lot on the web about Tannoys and their various lines I came to the conclusion that the System 15 DMT II was viewed as being a neutral sounding monitor that was designed for soffit installation in studios to help compensate for the fact that it did not produce the lowest registers of bass convincingly.

I wasn’t concerned about its bass output as I figured that could be addressed with a subwoofer system or a different enclosure possibly.

I have been using them now for about a year. I supplement them on the bottom end with an old Jamo subwoofer I have.

They are used in my modest 15 X 22 foot living room. I am currently using an old Audible Illusions 2D preamp and a pair of 25 watt Quicksilver Horn Mono amps to drive them.

I occasionally switch a different amplifier I’ve completed into the system to compare. Not all of them work well. I think partly due to the gain of the preamp. These speakers also have a minimum recommendation of 50 Watt amplifiers from Tannoy…perhaps that is part of the equation.

The speakers are very neutral sounding to me. They throw out a large image which improved recently when we redecorated and opened up the space a bit more. I’m not convinced they produce the holographic illusion and pinpoint detail I have experienced with front horns I’ve experimented with…but the directivity issues with those were worse.

When I considered the “musicality” of these speakers I didn’t feel they sounded dull or analytical…but wondered how these studio designs differed from the consumer Tannoy offerings.

When I started poking around again I found out that they had also used the 3833GG in their Churchill speaker which had very good reviews. It appeared that the consumer designs that tried to take advantage of these dual concentric drivers and extend bass response mostly just got enormous in volume.

When I looked for alternative boxes and crossover solutions I happened upon Zen Mods blog and his various experiments and projects with Tannoy.

I reached out to him and after some discussion he made a recommendation of transplanting the 3833GG drivers into an MLTL enclosure he had designed for his Tannoys using the much simpler CPA 15 crossover design.

He even provided me with some models comparing the response curves of both crossover designs.

I believe his experience with these drivers is very valuable.

Perhaps it is something you would like to consider in contrast the the large Arden reflex design and more complex DMT crossover.

I agree his experience is very valuable. He and mister Pass gave me great advise on my aleph3 adventure many (many) years ago.

The MLTL design is very tempting but after moving to a much smaller house space has become a thing for me and 1 metre high is the max. (Footprint is no Trouble, hight is)
Also i like the look of those legacy Ardens.

(And the dmt for that matter. I only do not have any plans/drawings for them. )

The crossover design, i was under the impression that this was the best one out there.
I do believe less is more in a design.
Could you maybe share the design?

Has to be said... I use high power and play loud..
My wife turns the volume even higher... To extreme levels

This is some images if the data he sent me.

The MLTL dimensions are reasonable…a bit taller than you mention at 46 inches.

Thank you for the files.
Unfortunately a higher cabinet is not an option.

To be honest I normally don't understand anything about graphics/measurements.
My ears tell me if it is good or bad...

What I can see is that it's more linear?

Did zenmod specify how much resistance the coils must have?

I am not using the CPA crossover yet…I do intend to when I find the time to build the MLTL cabinets.

I’m finishing a second Babelfish J2 to experiment with some active multiway projects I am interested in. One of which will use a 12” K3149 Tannoy in OB with woofer support.

Zen has built the MLTL cabinet already and my understanding is that he is using this minimalist CPA 15 crossover.

15AWG .71 mH for high frequency should be fine.

--- hello... I need all the specifications of the 15 DMT II tweeter, if that is possible of course.... Nevertheless, it's VERY important.....

Because, i have the occassion to buy the DMT II, but there is no tweeter on them... Strange situation, i know.... So i will put a similar tweeter with the same caracteristics... well, close as possible....

Until than, i'll pray very hard... 😉

I was wandering....

The HF section of the DMT MK2 crossover has 2x 1.3uF parallel (2.6uF) with a resistor in series. Parallel to that a 1.3uF capacitor.

The HF section of the DMT MK1 version has a 3.9uf cap with a resistor in series.

Isn't this exactly the same?
(Yes LF section is different)

If so, could i use the HF section of MK1 and the LF section of the MK2?

And if i should/must stay with the MK2 topology:

Can i put in 2.9uF with a resitor in series and then a 1uf parallel to that?
(I've seen crossovers for sale on "the bay" that use 2.7uF with 1.2uF.)
