+1I also feel the same for a lot of metal bands. Kind of a fustration to listen on good systems...One good surprise in heavy rock i would describe was A night at the opera by Queen, The prophet's song, it's almost a heavy metal/rock title but you hear very well each instruments and it definitely doesn't sound flat or heavily compressed.

'In for a penny, in for a pound', I want a 30" 'FR' Electrovoice, ne' University Sound.dreaming of a 18 inch version.

I must be the only one who enjoys metal on full rangers, currently listening to Opeth (Ghost Reveries)
What driver/cabinet combo and amp?
Mine's just wishful thinking.
I'm guessing the woofer's been NLA for at least 70-75 yrs and TTBOMK never was an 'FR' version.

@JohnnyDee
its a pity Fane had this wonderful potent 15 inch with nice rigid cones, faraday ring and triple cone not only dual cone. Now sold out.
But now you get only 12 inch ones like Sica 12d or Fane Sovereign 12 250tc. Both have faraday rings. And could be combined with a bass driver below 100 or 80 hz.
The 30 inch was a bass driver only.

If you like the sound of shattering glass. 😉 Those big 12in & 15in Fanes may be / have been cheap, but they need[ed] a heck of a lot of mechanical modifications to be at all listenable -at least for me. As-is, I've always found them roughly equivalent to reaming my ears with a dentist drill. Some electrical EQ can help too, providing you don't end up with a highly reactive impedance load in the process, but with widebands -mechanical solutions to mechanical problems. And they have those aplenty...dreaming of a 18 inch version.
The 15 goes up to 15khz(!)
I'm currently using my "cheap Omni", a woven glass fibre coned car speaker, mounted the wrong way, driven by a TDA2822 chip amp, but that's only because I'm playing around with omnis at the moment; my favorite speakers are a WAW design, a cheap 3inch paper cone, augmented by a 6 1/2 inch PA driver, in a very lightweight (1kg) enclosure. I'm planning on upgrading the 3 inch/6 1/2 inch WAW speakers to active, using LM4871 chip amps for both full range and bass drivers, I'm hoping getting rid of the inductor on the bass will make a big improvement.What driver/cabinet combo and amp?
