Good question. Well, all sorts of reasons. Wasn't totaly happy with the car I had (still have it), lost intrest a bit (got older) and my day time job took most of my energy. Before you know it a few years have gone by.

Sounds pretty much the same here. Gotten older and the work and family takes all of your energy. Thanks to my wife which has no interest in car hi-fi but still loves her husband (me), I have been able to keep my interest alive. Don't give up!

Haven't given up, I still mis the incredible good sound from those days. My intrest in audio gear has moved from the car to home hifi a bit.

lanzar opti
old alpine head units.
my favorite would be phoenix gold ms amps
built like tanks, simple yet when you look at them
beautiful.
sound was tight and distinct.
as far as today, i think technology is better
especially in subwoofers.
amps also but the manufactors dont use it.
its all about the bling and how much profit one can make.
i dont think car audio will ever be how it was when i got into it
late 80s to early 90s
around 97 on i think it started going down hill but not as bad untill 2000.
i agree with the post about alpine headunits.
this years lineup sucks.
what the hell are they thinking?
im keeping my 9813, 9815,
here is a pic of my old pg collection

All you guys should head over to diymobileaudio.com
As with any forum, there are some boneheads to be found there, but there are some gems too. Most of those guys just drool over the old amps and whatnot. PG, PPI, RF, Xtant.
Speakers and subs have totally moved on from back in the day, and headunits don't last forever in a car, so you really need something modern to get the most.
I'm rockin the clarion DRZ-9255 right now, hooked up to some old-school Xtant 2140c's bi-amping a set of Polk SR6500's. It would be so much more difficult to do everything I'm doing now (active XO's with time align on each speaker) then it would ahve been back in the day. I just have an alpine V12 class D sub amp on a Image dynamics OEM overstock sale sub for the bass.
I've always like the eclipse headunits, my GF's older alpine wasn't very good. I also had a top of the line (SQ wise) pioneer HU, DEHP880PRS, and the clarion totally smokes it. Its almost all that is left, pioneer DEQ/DEX combo is gone, alpine dead heads are gone, eclipse CD8000 isn't anywhere near the 8053 and similiar from just a few years back. Nak has a good reputation but no sound processing.
Here's a pic of my Xtants that I love...

Hey Septimus,
Thanks for bringing my thread back to life, I almost forgotten all about it!
For this whole Hi-Fi thing, I guess in the end it all about a matter of option and ones personal needs/wants.
Great Xtant's. I have never had the privilage of owning one. Maybe some day?
Anyone wanna keep this thread alive?
It's been over a year now!
What are your opions?
Regards,
Paul

From where I'm situated, it seems that interest in car audio has vanished. To reminice.....
I started buying car stereo gear in 96, before I had a driver's licence. Eventually I bought a car for the main purpose of installing a stereo. From what I can recall, there was much emphasis on SQ in the nineties. Very serious competitions and competitors, equipment available from big and small companies aimed at the competition market. It was exciting.
Then Sony invented the xplod brand, Car Stereo Review changed it's name to Mobile Entertainment and IASCA rewrote their rule book. Equipment changed from tools to toys.
I'm all for the old school, even if that is only a decade old.

My ramblings.
Car audio isn't dead and buried.
I think that peoples lifestyle has changed the way they think about car audio.
Alot of people are into the 'me' and 'want it now' phase.
Hence mp3 players/online shops/computers/game consoles.
They've been so brain washed with marketing that they actually think playing mp3's through a bose system is enjoyable.
When I was young (about to hit 40 now) everyone I knew was into pulling their car apart and 'tinkering'.
These days, well, just have a look at some motoring forums.
"how do I change the headlight bulb"
Come off it, use your brains.
Also a lot are quite happy with the factory systems, and yes some aren't to bad (note to car manufacturers - stop using bose crud, just use better speakers).
Some believe that you can't 'do' anything with the newer systems.
BUT, there is still a large number of people that enjoy a well designed and properly installed system (me included).
Education is the key.
How can we expext people to know what things like separation, sound stage, and tonal balance are unless they are taught ?
My gfreind was one of these until I opened her ears to 'the music'.
Now when a 'boomer' goes by she herself says 'god that sounded terrible' (certain words removed 😉 ).
We all have to start somewhere.
Manufactures are in it for the money.
They will only make what they can sell, and sometimes only if they can sell a lot off them.
I can see that as one high quality manufacturer goes down, another will takes it's place.
Nakamichi japan was a leader in it's day, they went bust.
Nak USA took over and only in the last year have they gotten their act together and are starting to offer quality units under the nak name again.

Wow, talk about a trip down memory lane, I was a car audio nut case back in the early 90's, I used to compete all over the western US, I attended the 1st IASCA Nationals help in Tempe Az, finshed 9th in the largest class (101 to 250 watts if I remeber correctly) back then it was all about sound quality, too bad those days are gone.. I recently built another system just to prove I could still do it, took it to one show and won my class, and best overall SQ, and this system was not even close to what I had back in the day, its all about SPL now... very sad.
oh and the new system used a 1995 model Rockford CD made by Denon old scholl is where its at!!
I still have a Rockford Punch 45 sitting in my garage ...lol

I think that 90s were the best times for car industry but not audio. A lot of audio companies make some real digital classics now like all Alpine F1 line, Clarion dzr9255, Nackamichi 700 etc. etc.
I like 90s for:
Cars:
ALL BMWs looks
Mercedes SL600 with double tinted windows 😎
Oldsmobile Aurora
People:
Mike Tyson
(he was super-cool in late 80s too)
Monica Lewinski
8 years of Carlos Castaneda
Music:
Sash and Nonex – “Hoopstar”
All Prodigy songs
Early Brooklin Bounce Male Voice especially “The Real bass” song
Kosheen – “Hide u”
Dr. Alban - “It’s my life”
And some of early Ace of Base themes

Hi im new here . i type with 1 hand so forget puntuations or sometimes even grammar. Back in 1998 i did own a autotek 333 and 2 = four channel watt 50x4 or 100 x2 if bridge autotek mean machines "white painted" this were excellent amps the 333 needed a nuclear plant for dc volts and amps. i got sick so i was force to sell them. i have now a punch 225.2 and Hifonics gemini 200 watts x4 all black except for the hifonics chrome logo. i have a 75 amp power supply for RV vehicle and just found a Marantz 6000 dc reciver in perfect shape at a drift store for 30 dollars "hell of a tuner and amp" 100 watts x 2 . im setting this up as my home stereo system with my computer , "crazy maybe im" i drive very little . the streets are no longer safe and i have over 2000 mp3 songs from the 60s,70s,80s,90s, plus rock concerts videos. i dont bother with any new music bands after 1998 . i paid $75 for the Punch and $50 for the Hifonics. my sound card is a X -fi sound blaster from creative sound. the $500 power supply well drive both amps at near max. i got the power supply FREE. I forgot in this nazi town you can get a ticket for a loud stereo another reason i wont bother with vehicles sounds "only my factory radio". but that 333 autotek was a beast.

Hey, Welcome to the forum.. Alot in common here.
Seeing that I only live about a mile from work and my wife mostly has the car for nonsense during the week and really has no interest in the hi end stuff, I decided to take most of what I have collected over the years and just make a home cinema/stereo system for the living room.
List as follows:
CD player: Rockford Fosgate RFX-8140
signal processors: Lanzar Optidrive G2M, E30 and the X3
Amp for Highs / Mids: Magnat The Rock 4 channel, 600 watt
Bass Amp: Autotek 300XI, 150 watt
SUB BASS: Crossfire VR2000 D, 2475 Watt RMS @ 13.8 Volt
Tweaters: 4 MTX Black Gold 1 Inch
Mids: 2 MTX Black Gold 4 Inch and 2 Lanzar DC Series 6 1/2 inch
Bass: 2 Phonocar 6 1/2 Inch in a bandpass enclosure
The box these speakers are in still needs finishing, But sounds absoutely incredible.
I still cannot figure out what Sub I should use on this system. Any sugestions would be appreciated. Would like 2 x 4 Ohms and aroung 2000 watts RMS.
All amps are running off the same home made 240 Ampere constent current power supply.
Signal processors/cd player are run on an 3 Ampere power supply.
Pictures will follow soon.

Im confuse , are you asking what kind of a sub speaker should you use with your autotek for bass ? . and about that 240 amp power supply man you must be a smart and lucky guy able to build such a monster power supply. But you could end up with a home system that would normally cost over $20.000 your 12 volt 240 amps power supply is the key element . by the way i did not recive a automatic Email notification and the option is turn on.

I am looking for a Sub that the Crossfire VR2000D can drive. I was thinking about a SOLO X18? The Autotek is driving 2 Phonocar 6 1/2 subs in a bandpass box. Just for a little kick when listining to "normal music"!!
The power supply is home made and can drive the VR2000D to the MAX. And was bought on Ebay for around 200 USD.
It is made out of a old Dell computer housing.
When I get a chance I will upload some pictures.
Even with just the 2 standing speakers and no extra Sub the sound is incredible!
I was informed by email. Maybe just re-ckeck your settings
