So the LRS plus is finally back in stock and i ordered a pair for our weekend getaway place where placement away from the walls won't interfere with everyday life (not an option in our main home) From what i can tell from posted 3rd party measurements and shared experiences, these roll off pretty quick below 100hz and have no real midbass impact to speak of......that simply won't cut it for me when i wanna listen to Bill Ward or Bonham.
So the whole SLOB thing has me intrigued......and i'm wondering if a 15" downfiring woofer under the panel built into a stand like thingy would work?.....what to do with the rear wave?......box on all four sides and open back only? (woofer is qts .77 and FS 31hz with 550w available and active DSP)
Some other folks have used Vandersteen subs to much success which use three 8" woofers in a sealed box.....front and two side firing......maybe that's a better approach for midbass?
And then there's always a true cardioid approach.....say two 10" woofer/subs per side lined up front to back and active DSP?
Thoughts?

The speaker will gain a few hertz more bass extension as the panels loosen up. You can use the tweeter resistors in the meantime. The LRS should be good down to 60Hz.
The LRS is Magnepan's introductory model. Its goal is an eventual upgrade to larger Maggies. I know that a lot of people use subwoofers, but the downside is less of the coherency that Maggies are famous for. I would say give them time.

This is my solution and really happy with it : https://www.diyaudio.com/community/...50hz-range-with-active-xo.405690/post-7516723

I dunno, can you tell enough about what's going on here to gin up one DIY?

Believe me i tried! lol...........with that grill clothe over it you can't tell.......i think it runs all the way up to like 500hz though.......folks seem to love the way it sounds with Wendell's wackysub though.
I looked those up. 😉that simply won't cut it for me when i wanna listen to Bill Ward or Bonham.
Heavy metal music sounds dreadful on my MG1.6s. I suspect that was the intent. 😉 You now own a speaker that will reveal all the manipulation that goes into pop music recordings.
I listen to heavy metal only at very low volume.

Clearly you haven't read the Audio Science Review test report on the LRS+ speakers. 🙂
For woofers, I suggest one of the Linkwitz dipole schemes. Those will integrate well and handle the bottom two octaves.

Davey - I skimmed ASR's review of the LRS. The test equipment that they use does a very complex analysis. I suspect that its built-in assumptions do not apply to large dipoles.

There is some good information in the ASR review thread.
However, yes, some basic assumptions of 2pi/4pi characteristics (and other factors) seem to fly over the head of the ASR crowd.
And then you have the usual suspects who pollute the thread with stupid quips, and thus you have an interminably long thread that's difficult to navigate.
ASR is a horribly moderated forum to boot. 🙂

Well the LRS plus arrived yesterday and I unboxed them here and set them up dirty to make sure they work…..and they do.
The ASR guys are partially correct…..it’s a wonky presentation with no bass impact to speak of below 200hz…..it’s there, it’s just not moving any air to give that transient slam a dynamic driver can BUT they are EXTREMELY FUN to listen to. With live recordings, I have yet to experience a speaker that actually convinces me I’m in the space until now. Fans of classical orchestra and chamber music take note…..with subwoofer support, it DOES NOT get much better than this. For rock, Cheap Trick Live at Budokan put me in the crowd…..a really pleasant listening experience.
This is what the ASR guys can’t see in their measurements nor could they convey subjectively as can clearly be seen in the setup photos with the panels all jammed up with obstacles to the front and sides regardless of the countless lines of text from the folks at Magnepan telling you NOT to do this. Give them 5 ft all around and if you can’t….please don’t buy them or try and review them…..it’s kinda like a review of a 911 off road…..silly.
My personal 10” home theater sealed midbass subs did an ‘ok’ job for low end support…..but it’s quite a ways from optimal. I’m convinced midbass needs to be handled by an open baffle source closely co located to the panels and NOT near the floor…..ideally a single 15 inch woofer in an H frame 24” off the ground would convince me with a steep high pass at 100hz and a 1st order rolloff from 250 would get the job done…….and it doesn’t need to be loud, it just needs to compliment the LRS content that’s already there. Content below 100hz would be just fine with a pair of sealed subs…….4 would be even better. Sadly a 15” woofer out in the space is impractical and frankly, not something I’m willing to implement. Instead, I’m going to mess around with an upfiring solution as a compromise when I have some time and courage to pull my 15PR400’s from their current homes.

@mayhem13 'This your first pair of Magnepan's? 🙂
There have been numerous DIYaudio threads on matching woofers with the smaller Maggie models.

No….i had a pair of 1.7’s a while back but they didn’t stay long….too much of a lifestyle intrusion. They did sound very different for the LRS as I can recall……much better lower end extension……but they didn’t image as well….and the LRS sound more detailed while the 1.7 was a little laid back.
(1) Ignore ASR... it's the modern version of Julian Hirsch and David Ranada.
(2) Give the speakers some time to loosen up.
(3) How much power do you have on hand? IMHO, 100wpc is entry level.
(4) How much do you expect to pay for those subwoofers?
(5) It maybe that the best subwoofer will be a larger Maggie.
(6) How do they sound? Midrange and treble?
I used to have (still do) a pair of 12 hooked up to a pair of Aleph5 monoblocks (90wpc into 4 ohms). Used a pair (still have) of Entec MX5. Played quite well.
Then I upgraded to a pair of 1.7 and a pair of A5s. Seldom use the subwoofers anymore.
But then, I don't play Umlaut Heavy Metal. The loudest I've ever run them was Frampton Come Alive Do You Feel Like We Do? And the occasional Pretenders, The Clash, Stones... and the like.,

I've wonder if I could stack the LRS... they are 4 feet tall each... my ceiling is 8 feet... hmm..
I believe the tweeters in the LRS are better than the 1.7s.... So, I've been talking with the factory about stacking them.
But, in the meantime, they've announced the 2.7...
I already have 1.7 and 12.
Woofers.... with a good amplifier, I'm running a pair of A5s, the 1.7 speakers rock. Sure, they are not Umlaut Heavy Metal speakers, but I doubt any Maggies are. I also thought about the bass panels... but, the "little" Entecs, not being played very loud, merge very well with the Maggies.... if I feel like playing them, that is. Most of the time, I feel no need for bass reinforcement.

I should clarify what I mean by "Heavy metal music sounds dreadful on my MG1.6s."
I like the 1980s Power Ballads by bands like White Lion, Warrant, Tesla, Cinderella, Steelheart, Dokken, etc. This music is characterized by screaming guitars. The vocals have been EQ'ed to make them audible over the guitars. Drums and bass are far down in the mix. The resulting frequency spectrum is hard to listen to on a speaker with (mostly) flat power response.

I am in the early stages of trying this. I have picked up OB 15" (eminence) and 12" drivers. Still working on the configurantion but the plan basically is to make a slot loaded bass as a stand for the Maggie's.So the whole SLOB thing has me intrigued......and i'm wondering if a 15" downfiring woofer under the panel built into a stand like thingy would work?.....what to do with the rear wave?......box on all four sides and open back only? Thoughts?
I heard the LRS at AXPONA with the OB bass units and liked it very much.
I have the 0.7i and run them without a sub which is fine when driven but at low listening, the bass could do with some padding,
- Home
- Loudspeakers
- Subwoofers
- Took the Magnepan LRS plus plunge… need sub recommendations
