I was thinking about making a turntable isolation shelf. I was wondering if anyone has made one and how successful it was.

My system sits on a homemade rack, similar in design to Hi-Fi racks Trio, or the Atacama equinox, made from solid oak.
The shelves however are 'Tesco finest granite worktop savers' similar items available in Wilkinsons (uk for about 9gbp each, 400mm x 300m x 15mm). These shelves are isolated from the rack by sitting on squash balls, a few pounds from any sports shop.
For just over 10 pounds you have a isolation shelf that rivals the ones on ebay costing in excess of 10 times as much.
A dedicated wall mounted shelf would help substantially. Squash balls and granite shelf
to further decouple and isolate any unwanted vibrations.

I built a wall mounted sand box with @ 75 Lbs of sand and a granite tile. Worked great. I had zero issues with vibration after I built it. You could wrap on the oak box with your knuckles and barely hear it even with the volume up pretty high.
When my DIY Turntable is finally complete a sandbox/granite/oak platform will be made. Similar in design to TNT sandblaster.

Thanks that's what's great about this forum. All of your ideas got me looking around a little and I found this article. you might find it interesting also

Something I don't quite under stand about the sandbox platforms. Does the top sit directly on the sand with out any other support? If it does how do you get it perfectly level?
Typically there is a shelf that "floats" on the sand. The sand is covered with a plastic film to keep it from getting all over. There is a bit of fiddling to get the shelf/platform to be level. Level also needs to be checked periodically since the sand may shift/compress further.
I built the shroeder/makris design on the galibier page.
I built the sandbox out of 1/4" aluminum as that is what I had about.
I still can get a feedback low frequency woofer excursion @ higher volumes but if I keep it under 105db I'm fine.
With the needle in the groove, measuring the voltage output at the phono stage while doing the rap test on the stand I get less than 20mv output.

a good shelf...
to consider is the Neuance by Greater Ranges.
not sure if Ken is still kicking, but his shelves have had great press over the years.

Has anyone tried building shelves (or any other hifi bits) out of bamboo?
I was thinking about building a flexi with something like this:
Walmart.com: Farberware Bamboo Cutting Board, 15" x 21": Kitchen & Dining
