Solved USB ground loop noise:

I tested this today, covered a ground pin with a stripe of electrical tape. This method certainly worked with both USB powered device and no USB powered device here, but I'm still not 100% sure about the risk doing this. Any opinion?

A better way to do that would be to have an isolated supply for the usb device, and introduce it into the usb cable. I have done that on a usb input to a DAC, and it was a huge upgrade from the computer supplied 5V.
I would not remove a ground and leave the power.

Do you mean that the computer side of the USB cable has 2 end connectors, one for data (2 center pins) and the other for power (2 outer pins), then the data end goes to computer and the power end goes to 5V PSU?
I find something like this, but one end still has Data + Power.

Yep, what he said ^, I should also mention that it really didn’t take a whole lot to vastly improve my setup vs using the computer usb power.
The 5V supply I’m using is just a simple second hand wall-wart, using a small transformer, rectifying diodes (w/snubber added), filter cap, regulator, capacitor.
Nothing fancy or close to being expensive.

For powered DACs that dont need USB power and if only needing data rates up to stereo x 96/24, then isolating all four USB lines looks worth considering when its so cheap.

So you guys are still connecting the ground to the data source? Data themselves are differential (opt isolated?), so I still wonder why the ground wire is absolutely necessary just for data transfer.
