Hey guys. Long time music enthusiast here with an interest to design and build from scratch a vintage style console that will house modern stereo components and a turntable. Aside from a few projects working with car audio, this will be my first attempt to build my own system.
My initial plan so far includes two sets of one 8" mid-bass driver, one 4" midrange, and two mid-range tweeters on each side set up as stereo and mounted on open baffles. Also a 10" subwoofer in the middle in an enclosed box. I'm not a super-audiophile guy but I do like a reasonable reproduction of sound quality of the vinyl records I will be listening to. The enclosed subwoofer box would not be mounted directly to the console but set on top of shock observing foam of some sort to reduce vibration.
Attached is my basic cosmetic design to scale. The blocks in the graph paper represent 2 sq. inches a piece. Two shelves, turntable on top, receiver below, subwoofer on the bottom behind the slitted panel. The center piece of the top would lift up for record changing. The side loudspeakers would be covered with a frame wrap around as shown.
The open baffle speaker kit I plan on using is LX521 by Linkwitz Lab ( https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/4-way-speaker-kits/lx521-linkwitz-lab-open-baffle-4-way-kit/ ) minus the four open-baffle 10" subs of course as I will be using one enclosed 10" instead.
I plan on building this out of cherry. A solid slab on top and plywood for most of the rest. Short steel legs.
Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks Guys!
