Correctamundo, I lumped low Xmax [under-hung] in under 'specs' [< 4 mm for most Altec 15"], so thanks for highlighting it since it can have a huge impact on 'tone' if exceeded, especially with the early paper surround models [<1mm Xmax].

I think that's a dead giveaway right there. If the VC and former, spyder, etc... will take that much power there's no way it will "sound" like an older 50 Watt or 75 watt 515.
Mine were made in August 1953 and were in 210 cabs. I think the ones being made by GPA, while they may be fine speakers, are mainly aimed at the sound reinforcement market, not necessarily for "hi-fi".
