Did you record that video?
What did the whole system consist of and how many subs were in use?
Replicating that performance in that kind of outdoor venue requires replicating the whole system in terms of models and quantities of boxes.

No I just found it on youtube. The publisher didn’t give the number of subs involved.
But I know they are RCF 8003 ASII.
As I don’t really know how concert/open air parties like this are made of in terms of kind and number of subs/tops. Anyone knows if such a « sound » at this distance from the scene like on the video is « gettable » with like 4 subs and 4 tops ?
For example, 4 DXS15MKII and 4 RCF712A.
As a beginner, I really don’t know if I’m dreaming or if I can get this in my garden haha.
On the longterm (3/4 months) I have a budget of around 4000€ and I already have two RCF712A. I would love to get to a similar sound system (like the one in the vid) gradually, adding a sub or top every month or so.

I found another video that seems to indicate that is four RCF NLX24s flown over four 8003 ASII subs, two of each per side.
Yess I just found the other video too, 4X NLX24 and 4X 8003ASII
Basically, the NLX24 are comparable to my 712A in terms of spl max so maybe if I get two more, I’ll be around that.
As for the subs, the 8003ASII’s spl max is 135db, so I should be looking for subs with around the same spl max.
I saw this sub is a bass reflex, does that explain the kind of lovely (for me) sound we get from that distance ? Can I get the same thing with a bandpass sub (like the DXS18 or DXS15 MKII) ?

Reflex subs are the most natural sounding, bandpass subs give up some of that to get the same or more SPL with less power. In my experience smaller bandpass subs can be pretty awful one note wonders.. they typically have a very narrow response peak, but 18's are better. If you want this kind of performance outdoors you better buy 18" subs, sub bass is all about air displacement so this is one place where bigger is better.
Ok thanks a lot! Well then I’ll go for a 18 bass reflex sub. Very probably this RCF 8003 ASII.
Just one more thing, I also have two RCF708A, should I forget about including them in the sound system ?
As they only have an 8inch woofer (compared to the 12inch of the other two RCF712A) and compared to the 18inch of the RCF8003ASII I’m about to get.

You could use them as DJ monitors. Kind of pointless to use them as part of the PA, they wouldn't even be audible next to the other speakers.
They’re only 2db less (in spl max) than the 712A, I mean in terms of loudness I’m sure I will hear them but I was just wondering for the gap between the 18inch sub and them (8inch).
It might make a strange sound...

It will lack low mids compared to the 712 and won't really be useful, you will understand once you have a chance to hear this for yourself.
You need to forget about the max SPL numbers too.. those are not attainable in the real world. A more realistic maximum music SPL is the long term continuous output(if available), if it isn't that is 6-9dB below peak.

Well I never get to push my tops for very long, I never use them for more than 2 hours long.
What I’m aiming for is having the maximum power (db) over that period of time..
I mean when I look at speakers specs, I would like to know which speaker would be able to be pushed at the highest volume without starting to « peak » or having distorsion.
So I was looking at SPL max but I guess it’s way more complicated than that to have any idea of what I’m looking for..
Thanks for pointing out I should look at that data.
I would be completely ok with what’s on the video, regarding the sound that you can hear from that distance by the way.

Yes it's more complicated. Also note that to obtain the smallest detectable increase in SPL(3-6dB) you need to double the number of cabs each time and they have to be identical cabs. So for example to get that increase from 2 tops and 2 subs you need 4 tops and 4 subs, the next 3-6dB requires 8 of each, the step after that requires 16 of each.

I see.. So a RCF 708A won’t get me even at 2db more if I add them to the already-in-place 712A I guess
By the end of the year I will have the 4 subs that’s for sure but just not really willing to get rid of the 708A.. I will try to include them with the 712A for the moment, even if they don’t make a big difference.
I was more worried about the possible strange sound that would come out if I associate these 8inch with the 18inch subs

Hi,
FWIW, I ran a quick spectrum analysis on that youtube clip (from 30seconds onwards where the abss kicks in) - nothing much below 50Hz, though obviously we don't know how much compression/bandwith limiting YT may do to the video after it's uploaded.
So, anything capable of sounding smooth from there on up should give you potential to recreate that kind of sound.
Cheers,
David.

Hello David,
I don’t have the ability to get the hertz frequencies of songs and videos so thanks for that!
So you mean if I have a sub able to go below 50hz, it will definitely be able to recreate that kind of sound ?
Isn’t it because this particular sub he used was a bass reflex one ?
Because I saw a lot of yt videos to get an idea of what sound I would prefer and for example the DXS15MKII in this nice explanation video: Yamaha DXS 15 mk2 and DXR 10 mk2 user review with sound demo - YouTube
At 15min40 into the vid, I feel like the sub has more of a vibration/resonance sound rather than a bass kick like on the previous video with the RCF subs...
So I was wondering if this bandpass yamaha sub could recreate the sound from the RCF subs vid.. Even if it has more spl max and same hz range.

Yeah, it does sound a little different, but overall listening to the balance of bass to everything else (even other tracks in the same vid), I think the Yamaha vid has more bass, which will skew our perception a bit.
I know it can be hard (especially right now) but you should really try to hear subs in person rather than just on YT videos to get a better idea of how they perform before spending several thousand Euros.

You simply cannot make judgements on SQ and system extension from a YT video, there are just too many unknown factors ranging from the frequency response of the recording device to who knows what processing that has been done prior, during or after it was converted to a web friendly format.
I get it! Thanks for the advices, it prevents me from making panic buys and being disappointed later..
I’ll be able to test some of the subs in a shop in a few weeks I hope and I will tell you which one I chose!
But basically, 4 135splmax (15 or 18inch) subs should be able to cover a 400/500m2 area outside right ?
In order for people in the back to be able to hear it clearly like on the video (sorry for refereing to it again haha)

With calm air sound carries very well outdoors so yes people will hear it no problem hundreds of feet away, but they won't feel it... just in case you were wondering.
