Anybody try the Wiim Ultra's USB out to a Jlsounds I2SoverUSB module ? just wondered if its compatible
Will be an improofment as the cheapaudioman found going USB into SMSL PO100 pro and optical into his DAC did sound markedly better than optical out from Ultra.
PO100 pro has the advantage of putting out I2S via HDMI if one needs it.

I can confirm the results of cheapaudioman using SMSL PO100 pro as a USB "reklocker".
Unbelievable how a $70 credit card sized additional component can bring this kind of improvement. Instrument separation, soundstage depth and clarity improved compared to spdiff out on the Ultra to the same DAC.
I will probably open the Ultra and implement that little bugger inside hooking it up to the stock spdiff plug. Clean LT3045 power to the PO100 can't hurt either.
I would have been totally happy with the internal dac if I hadn't tried the cheap Chinese R2R DAC especially now with the PO100 pro.
Finally a source that is way above any computer rig I had put together. All this for $470.
Cheers Klaus

I think I don't want to know how it measures.
But on the other hand I want to get rid of the noise that it exhibits below a certain output level threshold. I will try it with Jan Didden Silent Switcher and hopefully it will improve on that end.

That is probably not because of the PSU. You don't need any fancy switcher to try that out as a 78xx PSU (modern 78xx are quite silent!) can be made to test in minutes. It would be worrisome if that DAC generates that noise itself but it seems to be so. It may also be the reason it is liked but it is then not a good DAC. If so then one can ask oneself what sense it makes to persevere technical perfection. Had it more than once that I liked the sound character of an unseen device at a visit in a cosy environment only to notice later that is was a cheap 3 in 1 set playing MP3. That is what ears can do together with the brain. Even the smell of good food can have an influence. Thankfully one can weigh things the right way with a impartial jury of stone cold instruments.

Yes the noise problem is annoying and might be a deal breaker. On 90% of the material there is no issue, at least no one I perceive at the listening position.
Not a big deal as I got enough dacs that are better than the internal on.
That little DO100 pro is actually giving me what I missed on the internal dac.
When I get to it I will convert the Ultra's SE out to a balanced discreete one and see where this gets me.

That was my plan as well. However I already have Eversolo DMP-A6 that has XLR. I am starting to have reluctance to too many devices and superfluous stuff as possession is concern, maintenance, cleaning etc. Therefor I try to avoid external DACs, external PSUs, separate preamps and power amplifiers etc. The internal DAC should be excellent, no more no less. We probably would not accept it to have to add an external better engine to our cars.
Maybe the Eversolo just was a better choice.

I am not willing to live with OPA1611/12 or 1655/56 anymore. Not after I experienced the Sparkos SS2590 on my SMSL DL200 and the Burson V7V/V7C on my R2R DACs.
I'm not giving up on the China R2R DACs issue yet. I got addicted to that spacious and analog like presentation.
With the AKM and ESS dacs I hear the jazz ensemble as on a 10 m/2 stage with R2R it expands to 30m/2 with room between the instruments.
The Wiim Ultra is for me more than just a Streamer. I will correct some room modes with it and be able to utilize it's sub out in the future.

Well my Wiim Ultra arrived this morning, it was easy to set up . I'm using it to stream Amazon music ultra , analogue output is ok I find it a little compressed and flat , bass is little tubby . The USB out works with the Jlsounds i2SoverUSB which is useful
WiiM Ultra works in host mode (like a computer). So you can connect it via USB to any DAC (or USB device) that can be connected to a computer.Anybody try the Wiim Ultra's USB out to a Jlsounds I2SoverUSB module ? just wondered if its compatible
Yes I'll leave it up and running , can't fault it for the price . I got it for £279 Black Friday deal
Do we know the specs for the inter psu ? I heard it was +/-12v but not sure of the current

Thanks, it did an update and showed the Jlsounds as an option. I've tried 44.1,48k,96 and 192 all smoothWiiM Ultra works in host mode (like a computer). So you can connect it via USB to any DAC (or USB device) that can be connected to a computer.
@jean-paul are both the rca and xlr outs on the Eversolo DMP-A6 usable simultaneously? I've looked around and can't find the info. Would like to use one pair of the outputs for subs.
Hi,
am really impressed with the sound quality from the ultra and agree with the comments made about using a linear power supply.
Have measured the switching supply and it is 12 V DC out and looks same as Mornsun LD20-23B12R2, though no makers name markings on it.
I've removed it and have tried a linear power supply and 12 V super capacitator connected to the 2 pins where the Mornsun output to.
Seems to work ok and sounds a bit better, but am interested if this is the correct way of doing it and wondered what solution you guys would come up with ?
