Never tried, but I think it is not difficult as the voice coil is connected to the diafragm and you can order replacement diafragms, so they could be changed by the user, I guess. But it scares me off too, to fiddle with the inner parts of a CD. I know there are drawings from the inside on internet, so they may give some clues about alignment of the diafragm.I was just too scared to do it on the mid driver...is it hard to put the voice coil in easily?
My dad of 82 who never has said anything about the sound. Said when I first demo'd them to him: "The sound is perfect". My brother looked at me and said straight away: "Your last speakers ever". Every day I'm flabbergasted by the sound. I'm extremely happy. My son said last night: "You have outdone yourself" Not mine to take credit for though but good to hear nevertheless.
I could easily live with this speaker forever. But it is satisfying that there is still room for improvement in the midrange horn and in the crossover. I could get another pair of autoformers so the hf path does not have to pass through an extra capacitor. Etc. Im now also interested in rew and a mic.
Hi Bas,
nice system and I have no doubt it sounds great allready, the drivers are all very good. I do own a pair of HF10AK's and have tried them in many horns. While the STH100 horn is nice it still has some horn colouration that is only obvious when you comoare it to a horn/waveguide tah does not have this colouration. Best sound I got from them is from a air of 3D printed ATH ST260 waveguides. These are very linear, have almost no colouration at all, at least the least of all waveguides/horns I have tried. It is absolutely worth it. Same for the midhorn, I have not heard your horn but since it is a difraction horn it will have some colouration as well. A little nervousness that is not there with proper "Hifi" waveguides. Take a look at ATH horn, you can buy vey good designs there. Since I had such a good luck with the simplest standard design from ATH I have no doubt that there bigger waveguides sound absolutely great.

Hi Sjef,
Thanks for the help! I was indeed planning to get something better than the Paudio 4525 which as you mentioned is a diffraction horn that was made for a different purpose than smooth sound at home.
I am saving for the Athos Yuichi A-290 or Tractrix round for the mid. I was not aware of the STH100 shortcomings apart from something at 4k. But since I am using them > 6kHz...I did not give it another thought. Will investigate further.
What would you suggest for the mid horn?
Kind regards,
Bas

I would seriously look at the ATH designs, at least the small one I have got sounds better than the round tractrix horn I had. The Tractrix beamed a lot up top, that's waht tractrix horns do generally. I thoght the sth100 was a little better. The ATH waveguide is very smooth and with very good of axis response. Might become a bit big for a midrange driver though, you might get away with the 460mm waveguide. They can (and should) be used standalone which makes there visual impact smaller than when mounted in an enclosure or baffle. I have never heard a Yuichi horn, always have been curious about these but I can't comment on them. Many people like them though. Choices, choices, too many choices, the hardest part of our hobby.
Crossover and dsp+amp (Disappointing that the class D amps are noisy.) (Or to be more accurate I can hear some noise when no music is playing)
It is a shame those minidsp plate amps aren’t quieter. For a simple build I prefer their size and interface to Hypex, but the Hypex are quiet.
I got the minidsp icepower "new/hardly used" for 1/2 the price..." could not " let that deal go.
I don't remember them being this noisy earlier...it happened after I put them in the bamboo enclosures...so some cable routing may even fix it. Perhaps shielding some cables as I found googling for solutions.

I'm chuffed at all the deals I found since 2017. Saved myself 2000 euro's.
