It appears you have a multi-track reel to reel and a 24 channel head unit, along with the monitor speakers.
Was Grandad a part of this sort of thing?
No? Another explanation is he found this at auction when a studio shut down. You don't usually find this sort of thing in your local newspaper ad.
He has the pieces needed to do some studio work, back in its day.

MTR-90 on eBay asking US$4850. There's one on Reverb.com for a similar price.

As others have said, you have some nice equipment there that's worth significant money if it's in good shape. If you have the time, I wouldn't be in a hurry to do anything with it until you figure out what each piece is worth. Some may need refurbishment, but there are people out there that specialize in that kind of work.

It would also be a shame to have them go to someone that doesn't know what they are.

Yes; carefully remove the carpet tack strip off the machine, taking care not to slice the tape or scratch the surface. What you have is "gold from the golden era"; there are folks who'd love to have that stuff - your job, if you accept it - is to find who they are and make an equitable transaction with them for the true value of what you have.

That part can be a real pain, but consider it as an honor to the fellow who originally owned that equipment. Take all the time you can stand dealing with it; I'm sure your grandfather would have appreciated knowing his stuff went to someone who'd love to have it as much as he did. Good luck with it!
