New home water heaters and general heating

Lucky for me I have two fireplaces in my house, and I have had to use them many times to keep warm during prolonged power outages. It seems to me that basic infrastructure like elec power generation has gotten much more unreliable over the past several decades in the US.

When I look up in my town, I still see some 1930's electrical wiring. You know, the old cloth covered wire spaced with one conductor about 10 inches from the next. The poles in some cases have been replaced, but not all. Ironically, squirrels will less likely short these together as readily as the modern lines, but that is not any excuse.
Up on Heart Mountain many of the farmers had electrical problems for decades, but not as much anymore. It seems to work both ways, but really much of it out there seriously needs replaced.
