Tube Voltage Regulator, Is it worth the effort

This thread has some good, solid information and very little bravado.

Special Mention to:
janneman
Tubelab
kevinkr
Allen Wright
Bas Horneman
SY

For their interesting contributions.

IMHO, There are several ways to make an adequate Power supply. And several ways to totally botch the job.

In the 1980's, I was totally against using solid state in a tube preamp. However, this was more about not using low voltage devices in high voltage circuits than anything else.
Now that high voltage transistors are available this is not a major consideration.
My first tube amp is going to be a platform to play with some of the discussions.
I want to try unregulated and regulated power supplies. I will probably start out with unregulated choke input supplies.

First holes have been drilled...

Mock up pictures. The wooden "boxes" are from Ikea and will cover the output transformers. The single power transformer shown will be put under the chassis.

Building the Baby Huey EL84 PP

Posted 19th October 2009 at 03:08 PM by Bas Horneman (Bas Horneman's diyAudio.com blog)

As a way to kick off my project. I decided to pour the Baby Huey thread into a wiki form. So that I would have all "necessary" info in one spot. And hopefully so would other prospective builders.

BPA300 Group Buy Round 2

The user rhysh started to organize group buys last year and it started well in true diyaudio spirit but somewhere in February, March things were starting to going out of hand and more and more people were getting irritated about zero deliveries.

By then I started to clean up group buy wiki pages and stumbled over Rhys' pages. I noticed the irritation and started to bug Rhys when he eventually sent me an email telling me to stop.

I kept a low profile for a while in hoping for the better. Unfortunately not much happened. Later on I'll decided to help him with the administration. I set up a forum for me and him. This didn't turn out well. He didn't sign in as the thought was and didn't do his share.

Some time later an idea came up that he should send all his stuff to me and Sweden but in the meantime AlanElsdon offered to drive from south of England up to Sheffield but then it was already too late since Rhys...

100 Jfets on their way :)

Posted 9th October 2009 at 11:15 AM by wintermute (Wintermutes Rantings)

Its been really cold the last two days.. I was thinking whilst walking to the train this morning that I should have worn my winter coat! (Cold by Sydney standards anyway, The Northern Hemisphere people would laugh at my notion of cold)

The weather has unfortunately had a damping effect on the progress of my speakers too. First problem is that my workspace is the balcony, and it has been very windy and stormy, so I haven't risked doing any more veneering.... Second thing that worried me was that with the wet weather I might have troubles with splitting.

So Last weekend I placed an order for 100 2SK170BL's from Spencer. He sent them on Monday so hopefully will have them in about a week. The plan is to build a B1 buffer (ultimately I suspect there will be more than one), to finally do away with the abomination that passes for a preamp in my Integrated Series 200 amp.

The B1 will I think be the easy bit... I will probably build it on perfboard...
