To talk about the possiblity of transformerless amps, I have started a new thread:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85456

Then to talk about the issues involved in running below fs, I have started another thread:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=85431

I still want to continue this thread, and look at the use of giant subwoofers, bigger than 18", and with a low fs.

To help there, I am reading this thread:

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=73197

Anyone else know of, or even have, a driver bigger than 18"?

I had been told by Clarion over the telephone that it worked down to 5hz. This was about 4 years ago.

I thought 5hz was fs. But I guess not. I wonder how they come up with that number then.

Of course, I wouldn't expect this to work well at 1000hz. It is too big.

Say maybe 150hz max. I would want to keep it even lower.

I think the Clarion is only available on custom order these days, but they do show up on Ebay occasionally, often in the Musical Instruments section, new they were about 1/2 the price of the Fostex.

Other Big Production Subs:

got any more info on the diatone and mitsubishi?

never heard of diatone. Does that have a web site?

Looks like the diatone is also about 800mm?

Is Clarion still selling their 800mm? Is there's made by Misubishi, there were rumors.

One reason for my interest in giant subwoofers is not just to move more air, or soak up more amp power, but to get a real low fs.

Fan subwoofer

My plan is to build an infinite baffle subwoofer (someday), although that sonotube sub that Mike Callas has built (or a transmission line) seems like a good alternative (because as he points out, the phasing issues have be improved upon) if you don't have access to another room, attic or crawlspace for an infinite baffle (see http://www.pykett.org.uk/vlf_repro.htm for a discussion about IB compared to other subwoofer types).

However, the best means for achieving bass response lower than 20 hz is not with a conventional driver, but by using a fan subwoofer (as mentioned far above).

Check this out:

And see this:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=651499&page=11&pp=30

In a nutshell, you would be able to get down to under 5 hz at very high levels with this device, and with much lower distortion. The question is can your house take it???
