It's been a while since I've visited this forum, I too have made the switch from Diy lcd to a CRT projector. I purchased a NEC 6PG from Curt Palme a while back, and havent had any regrets. My Nec throws a picture that puts all of the digital projectors I have seen so far to shame. I have seen the infocus SP5700 and a $10,500 Dwin DLP projector both on Stewart Firehawk sreen in good light controlled conditons and neither one compares in my opinion. Not only do you get good black levels and shadow detail,
but there is no screen door on a CRT and there is a very film like smoothness to the image.
I would think that most anyone capable of building a decent DIY lcd projector will have no problems learning to set up a front projection CRT.
Also I would recommend buying a CRT from someone like Curt who can give you a warranty and technical support. It costs a bit more to buy a used CRT from him or one of the other Dealers that frequent the AVSforum, but you could think of it as buying "a little piece of mind".

hey Jetguy,
welcome to the DARK side😀 lol congrats on the NEC I hear those are really great, you have any pics of it in action>?
On my very 1st day on avs forums...Curt Palme was the 1st name I heard...that guys some kinda legend...lol
I dont think his prices are high I think its the opposite,he let a Barco 801s go for 500$ shipped!! I may sell my B600 to get a digital crt..but its rare that I will find another CRT with full life like my barco 600.

i found a used sony crt in a thrift store for 50 bucks but didn't know what it was at the time. if i find another is it worth the money even if its busted? for parts or something? i would have definitely got it now.
yeah most projectors are worth 100-200$ and sometimes higher if busted, but busted toa certain degree 🙂
it also depends on what crt u found..if it was 129Q or G90..then thats 500$ and up right there...best proejctors ever made...lol

Yah Negative, I have the good fortune to live only a couple hours drive from Curt so I got to see my PJ before I bought it. Curt is a very nice guy and definatly knows his stuff.
I would highly recommend him, he is however, pretty much swamped with orders at this point. I think word is getting around, it could be the weather.
One of the projectors he gets in quite often are the Ampro 2000's, they are very compact and have digital convergence, and the "G" models will scan to 80KHZ. I have seen them and them and they throw a very nice picture, although not as sharp as my E.M. focus NEC. He sells them for between $550-900 or so depending on tube condition and the type of tubes that are in them. He had a zero hour set for $850 on his mailing list he just sent out.

I need a connection badly bcuz I need to setup my CRTs contrast..my contact told me I cant set it externally it has to be done by DVD setup or program etc..my image right now is great but my dark scenes are way too dark.
Thanks!

Thats the type of cable I use to connect to my pc. So it should be the right one. What are you hooked up to now? My HTPC has a Radeon Video card, I dont know for sure about the Nvidia drivers,
But the setting you need to bring up the detail in the dark parts of the movies, is gamma control. It can be found in the video overlay controls in your video cards "advanced display properties"
I usually pause the movie, and make it a window large enough that I can still see, bring up the overly settings and set the image brighness, contrast, saturation, and gamma to taste. I have found that just about every DVD out there needs some kind of tweak in this area to get the picture I want.
The HTPC works very well for these CRTs IMHO. Although I am a bit frustated with mine at the moment, It has ran flawlessly for about the last year and now my new Enermax power supply took a dump on me, and it looks like my video card has devolped a problem as well. Never rains, then it pours; or snows as is the case around here.

Thanks for the cable info im going to buy one tonight about 15$ shipped 🙂
I wish I could change the contrast from SVHS 🙁 ..oh well

P.S I hope your enermax problems get fixed soon man, I recently bought a ThermalTae 420w PSU bcuz I had a cheap 450w PSU...i didnt wanna risk it..lol

Well negative................ technically Since the cable you will be buying goes from VGA to BNC you could connect up a external TV tuner to the VGA part of the cable, Hook up the video sources Like Svideo into the adapter and then adjust everything with the adapters adjustments 😀 that would solve that problem. Hey ND where did you get your CRT? Ebay? Im thinking I need to make a account to just get a CRT as I cant find those used around me. And, I have Plenty of room to hang the 100+ lb beast in the basement from the cealing.😀
Another big advantage of a CRT projector is that you can adjust for keystone, and other issues associated with placement geometry without adversely effecting the image quality as will happen on many LCD\DLP projectors. I personally would not go for a projector more than about 7-10 years old, and the newer the better. The newer ones have better designs that hold their convergence much better.
Generally the projector manual is very complete and will go into great detail on the convergence. If you have to mechanically align the CRT\Lens, that is a bit more work and can be done better if you have the right equipment.
If you live in Canada, you may want to look into an Electrohome projector as well. You sometimes find parts around for them.
I will suggest if you are going to use a CRT then plan on a PC as your DVD player. This is your cheapest and just about best source of scaling. The more lines you can project on your CRT, the brighter the image (in general, but it is not that easy). Many CRT projectors will be capable of at least 1280*1024 and many 1600*1280.

You should be able to adjust brightness and contrast on your PJ as well. I dont know much of anything about you Barco 600, but you should have those basic contolls avalible to you. Do you have the remote control for that PJ. Wait, that might be a stupid question, your chassis is analog isnt it? Seems like there should be brightness and contrast settings some where on the machine.
Have you asked the guys at AVS? Or better yet maybe look in the manual. http://www.crtcinema.com/manuals.html
I would look myself but the download is over 20megs, too much for my bandwith challenged modem, He,He.

my CRT came with manuals on cd(300 MB!!) with all sort of apps..calibration pj calc etc...
I have a remote controlled video/data switcher (RCVDS) Quad 400 I can controll brightness contrast etc...but the FULL 0% to 100% controlls are internal I cant get the contrast too high from my RCVDS,also my brightness level is at 0% on my RCVDS I do this to save tube life..and the thing is STILL bright!! lol
yeah...i know what its like to be bandwidth challenged 🙁 I just got DSL last week..and got over 12 gigs already..lol 🙂
