NASA consultant John Karlson, his little KR5 "Rocket" and Rise of the Klam projectors

they had a vent on their baffle (BP6A - series vented) rather than being sealed (BP4) or external vent (BP6B - parallel vented)

I don't think the vents contributed much to output as back chambers were relatively small, vent area small, and damped by the grill cloth. Karlson even vented the little KR5 "Rocket".

- like Robert Reams' "clothespin" which went on top of Reams' "Karlson Hypex" ? You can see its sealed back chamber

ha ! - - I'd think we'd need Reams Karlson Hypex to handle the lower frequencies. There's an AES paper on it.

That's Greg Raw standing next to a Karlson-Hypex with unloaded Clothespin on top. I'd imagine an EV12L type might make a decent driver for a midrange Clothespin like this one.

The Karlson-Hypex is very interesting as in this double wide version, there were two JBL D140 15 inch speakers , with sealed back chamber, which fired down into a chamber; The throat of the horn was a K-slot - look close. Measurements
in the AES paper were pretty impressive and math, "heavy". I've never seen anyone explain how this cabinet might work

Here is the associated patent

Audio spatial environment engine
Patent number: 7853022
Abstract: An audio spatial environment engine for flexible and scalable up-mixing from an M channel audio system to an N channel audio system, where M and N are integers and N is greater than M, is provided. The input M channel audio is provided to an analysis filter bank which converts the time domain signals into frequency domain signals. Relevant inter-channel spatial cues are extracted from the frequency domain signals on a sub-band basis and are used as parameters to generate adaptive N channel filters which control the spatial placement of a frequency band element in the up-mixed sound field. The N channel filters are smoothed across both time and frequency to limit filter variability which could cause annoying fluctuation effects. The smoothed N channel filters are then applied to adaptive combinations of the frequency domain input signals and are provided to a synthesis filter bank which generates the N channel time domain output signals.

Electro-acoustic system analyzer
Patent number: 5555311
Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing performance parameters of an electro-acoustic system. The bandwidth of the electro-acoustic system is determined by applying a broad band stimulus signal to its input, and picking up the resulting acoustic signal with a microphone. The microphone output is then applied to a state variable filter having a low-pass filter output, a high-pass filter output, and a band-pass filter output. The operating frequency of the state variable filter is changed incrementally through each of a plurality of frequencies. The high and low frequency responses of the electro-acoustic system is determined on the basis of the operating frequencies of the state variable filter at which accumulated values of the outputs of the state variable filter bear certain relationships to each other.

little PC speakers, if a K may help, probably would be a regular K - unless the speaker is inordinately "bright" as the klam format buries the speaker at the far end of the slotted wedge vs a regular K having the driver at the shallow end.

Little K have their cavity resonance up pretty high It might be possible to make a little klam which does not honk, using pvc pipe, sliced diagonally and end fitted with a flat piece with slot cut - or take a heat gun and flatten the front pipe to get an oval cross section. That could be fun. .The back chamber could be 4" or 5" pvc adapter so result would look like a sawed off potato cannon.

This little klam w. FR88 was pretty bad sounding - a speaker with significant on-axis rise such as a LaVoce 3" I've used with slot filter probably would have been better.

9mm Baltic birch would be better even for such a tiny thing as this than 6mm.

Melamine sponge front and back chamber pads probably would have helped too.

My klam15 sounds fine without any front chamber damping. Mild damping might give some improvement.

Klam8 and Klam 10 size could use some front chamber damping to reduce ricochet junk. That would not be noticed
at some distance but would be obnoxious up close.

I'm lusting after the first X15's tweeter klam and hope can find someone to print it after Pelanj posts the 3D model.

I've personally only built Klam3 and Klam18. I do think a Klam15 built by my long distance friend John Lapaire, turned out very well and the only mod I would do would be to shorten its back chamber to move Qtc and power handling up a bit, and reduce overall length. It should be very nice up on a tripod. (I lost upper body strength in just a couple of months decades aoo from sleep apnea - don't know what it really did.}

IIRC there's maybe 2 cubic foot rear chamber. With medium rear chamber bill that might be knocked down by a half a cubic foot, which would shorten overall length by maybe 4 inches.
