I think the drivers were fine, although I suspect PE sent me a restocked item ( previous buyer didnt like them? ) both drivers sounded the same. Peaky and smeared in the 4-8k range. Typically high spl drivers will have a lot of details, these guys didnt. I was very disappointed with them.

They were tested with a 2.2uF cap in series. I forget if I had a second order inductor in place or not. This was years ago.

I replaced them with vifa xt25's, which were great. Although, not as sensitive....

..my guess is the drivers were damaged either from the factory or a previous purchaser (..it's easy to do, particularly with a soldering iron on the terminals.) 😱 😀

Who knows though, maybe it is a crap driver. (..it's almost sparking my interest to purchase a pair.. almost.)

-again, used properly they should easily outperform both compression drivers and std. tweeters.. BUT they aren't for the lower treble.

Zaph has the old YAG 20 measured which is similar to Dayton's old PT2C-8, where you can see the problems with distortion at lower freq.s and the narrowing vertical directivity (..which usually requires a directed/aimed driver approach for the design):

Even the reviews on the old Dayton are pretty good, and tend to emphasize the "clarity" character I mentioned:

What horn is the mid driver on? Actually, I'm curious about the whole setup. Please post pictures.

Thanks for the pic.

Does your crossover setup allow you to delay the midhorn? If you could get the horn mouths abutting, the integration might be a little better.

I see you have the lowest bass boosted by the same amount as the highest treble. The ATP 200 is down to about 95dB in that range, which implies that anything >95dB through the treble could replace the ATP, while using roughly the same settings.

In my similar case (small room, 2445J + pictured horn + 15s), with the cheap Fostex tweeter, the problem wasn't efficiency. The problem was getting the combo to sound natural on vocals (e.g. The Staple Singers). To me, it integrated better with the tweeter actually inside the mid horn. I didn't find a perfect solution.

Doesn't work: pic of similar rig

This link contains a review of a tweeter, which costs about $150 but seems promising: it measures flatter + louder than the ATP, particularly over 10kHz.

Correct me if im wrong but do baffle step not boost it to 99db @ 1M?

1) baffle step is a thing that matters at the lower end of a driver's range.

2) The SB Acoustics FR plots state that they are measured on an IEC baffle (which is really big, so the baffle effects are low in frequency).

Unless you put the tweeter on a horn, you'll get no boost. The only baffle effects likely in practice are a bit of ripple from close baffle edges & nearby objects ...such as those rather large midhorns.
