It's in the Script ...

Da·da or da·da (dädä)

A European artistic and literary movement (1916-1923) that flouted conventional aesthetic and cultural values by producing works marked by nonsense, travesty, and incongruity.

Project Dilemas

Posted 19th February 2010 at 05:41 PM by kevinkr
Updated 19th February 2010 at 05:50 PM by kevinkr

Isn't it odd how sometimes the things you intend to do first end up being the last things you actually get done? Or am I the only one with this problem??

I always have a few projects on the back burner, and few that are supposed to high priority and sometimes one or two that just appear because of an unforseen opportunity or a seemingly good idea.

In order of supposed priority I have been working on a new GM70 based SE amp design, an acrylic plinth TT, a pair of Half Chili Changs, and quite unexpectedly an FFT based audio measurement set up.

The turntable and the GM70 are more or less stalled. I need to purchase a mini-lathe, and a good metal cutting blade.

On the GM70 despite designing a choke coupled driver stage that really performs well I am still waffling over whether I want to use IT coupling instead. And the kicker is I need the above tools to fabricate the chassis for these amplifiers which ultimately will be 4 chassis...

Past and Present Reflections

Posted 17th February 2010 at 01:17 PM by smoketest

[originally written in May 2009]

Hello, my name is Brian and I’m a user. A Magnepan user. I, like perhaps many of you, have a mixed relationship with my Maggies. This is, in a way, a sad story of more than 20 years of listening dissatisfaction. At least until recently, but before we discuss that please indulge me the time to bore you with some history.

Consider your roaring twenties, or at least consider mine. In the early 1980s I was fortunate enough to bag a full set of precut particle board for a pair of Speakerlab K-Horn woofers. I added a 15 inch woofer, a full width Altec horn mid-range, a Heil tweeter, a home brew cross-over network and our little 2 bedroom house in West Palm Beach truly did roar. In fact our poor neighbor across the street had to walk over and ask us to turn it down a couple of times. With a borrowed Audio Research D-75A and a home made tube only pre-amp, it sounded like a rock concert.

After moving those behemoth speakers...

M2C clone boards
Special thanks to Gerd, CRT and RusselC for assisting with this board concept and implementation.

The board is ~215mm x 50mm each channel

The board thickness is 2mm, the copper is 2oz copper double sided.

For C2, There are a number of options.
1. standard is to use a 10uf Elna Silimic 2 35v cap.
2. Use a cap to fit over the outlined block. This will require some headroom over the power resistor, but allow for a film cap.
3. As I display in one channel, use an ecap, and then use a 15mm film cap as a bypass for it.

PSU for High end audio without electrolytic capacitors

Updated 1st April 2014 at 09:45 PM by Nazar_lv

From article https://s-audio.systems/diy/psu-without-electrolytic-eng
----------------------------------------------

Electrolytic capacitors are constant part of power supply of audio devices, but in terms of sound he does not bring anything good, dispersion of sound quality-type of electrolytic capacitor is very large. Sonically the best types of electrolytic caps are Nichicon KZ, FG, Panasonic Pureism, Black Gate FK, NX, Elna Cerafine, Silmic II, Silmic, but the attempt to eliminate from PSU electrolytic capacitors was very successful, instead is used "electronic capacitor" (right side of the circuit).
It is global negative feedback free electronic substitutes, that has a low and stable impedance 0,1...0,2Ohm (equivalent to cap 40000u) in the band to megahertz shunting NP0 0,1 microfarads Murata GRM31 in close to chips, it completely detach regulator (317\337) from load, therefore we have the ideal transient response when load "changes",...

My F4 Guide

Posted 11th February 2010 at 06:36 AM by cviller
Updated 2nd November 2012 at 08:11 AM by cviller

This is a guide to building a F4 using my boards, but you may be able to find some useful information here even if you use other boards.

The boards are based on the schematics from Nelson Pass's FirstWatt F4. You can get the service/user manual here: First Watt: Products: F4

You might want to check out the GB thread here: https://www.diyaudio.com/forums/group...gb-f4-pcb.html

Here is a picture of the pcb.

Errata
There is a trace error around R22. I have cut the traces on most of the boards I have sent - and the rest of the batch will be cut before I send them out.

These are the cuts which needs to be made:

And the green lines indicate where a connection must be made:

This can be done simply by having the leg of R22 go through the hole and to the side.

Why are grown up people mean?

Posted 10th February 2010 at 02:58 PM by peranders
Updated 11th February 2010 at 04:13 PM by peranders

I'm sure you'll know about a forum where they call this forum "The Pub"? From time to time I read this forum and for those who don't know, the forum founders were a bunch of banned people from this forum. Some of them are rather decent but a few individuals must cry out their contempt. Why does it have to be that way?

Example:
Mr X says this about my forum:
Quote:
I know some other guy, from Sweden, who has several sockpuppets in his own forum.
He asks the questions about his own products and answers them.
Now beat this.
The forum software doesn't reveal a thing of the user identity such as IP numbers. I have clearly stated that the forum is mainly for support and you can also see that many of the users use the same nick as in other forums. Mr. X isn't a moderator at my forum, therefore he can't see IP numbers, not even a clue what they might be.

Mr. X is a grown up person which I'll believe has a working social life....
