The XSD Speaker

I sure wish I could of built these great speakers but when I did more research I had to come to the conclusion just not going to work in my limited RV space🙁
Neither will me beloved fully upgraded Edgarhorns. I wanted to use the 8" drivers to see what I could gain on the bottom end to hopefully not need subs to free up more space as the only place to put them was behind the XSD.

I have sold the PVR drivers but I still have the GRS tweeters and 18 of the 8" GRS woofers available.

-------------

I decided to build the Frugel Horn Jain with the Mark Audio M200 in copper with solid walnut baffles, something simple without crossovers, etc as can run them with my also beloved and fully upgraded Baby Sophia 10 watt PP amp as plenty of power and should do very well with bass and though a bit big will fit and should work well in the space.

Later on I may build other speakers to try out and none likely to be sealed or ported traditional designs, I like things to be different than the norm though I have build some dang fine versions of each so I might end up doing so eventually.

-------------

I hope someday I get to hear the XSD speakers, never going to have the space for them so never going to build them🙁

As predicted by @xrk971 the response falls abruptly at 470Hz. At 470Hz the response is still 9dB higher than at 70Hz. This has me wondering if I should xo around 550Hz. I will be using active xo and Acourate to hammer down the response into the targeted house curve.
I finally got around to measuring the system, setting it up and do some listening.

The SLOB midbass sounds amazing! Much, much better than the naked 18". A lot more impactful, meaty, yet defined midbass.

I decided for no-wings, xo at 70 and 400Hz for now. Will try going up to 470Hz and loer that 70Hz.

Big thank you!!! @xrk971

Thank you @xrk971

I need to give it another pass with wings. I probably tested with wings that were too narrow. How wide are the ones you are using?

My MTM top is work in progress, as can be told from the looks 🙂
The midranges are B&C 8PE21. Originally I was targeting a 45-type SET to drive the pair, just like the 45 Ihave driving the tweeters. Thise Beyma TPL are very efficient!
But for now I'm driving 8PE21 with A/B KT88 and now I'm only using one midrange per side. Toying with these and thinking about other MT options. Too bad nobody is trying the Radian LM10n as it looks interesting to pair with a tweeter like yours!

I find your setup very interesting. Why are you not fully happy with this mid/high solution?

Does the 8 x 6.5" driver setup seem balanced with one 8PE21?

Are you testing with an active crossover/DSP? Do you have a measurement of the 8PE21 on the baffle you are using?

I have thought of using 8" o 10" divers for SLOB and the 8PE21 (or a 10") on top, that would limit of the SLOB to 300-350Hz, and that still might be ok with the 8PE21.
